Hoewedes set to join Juventus in hasty trade

GERMANY’S World Cup winner Benedikt Hoewedes was set to join Italian champion Juventus yesterday in a hastily arranged transfer after being stripped of the captaincy at Schalke.
Juventus confirmed that Hoewedes was in Turin for a medical check.
According to German media reports, the 29-year-old center back is set to sign a 1-year loan deal, which will cost Juventus 4 million euros (US$4.7 million), with an option to buy for 14 million euros.
After ten years and 240 appearances for the Gelsenkirchen-based club, Hoewedes’ departure is extremely hasty. Having been Schalke’s club skipper since 2011, Hoewedes was suddenly stripped of the captaincy by new coach Domenico Tedesco and left on the bench for the Royal Blues’ first two league games this season.
Tedesco, 31, praised Hoewedes’ professional attitude, but it was clear the pair did not see eye-to-eye given their respective body language on the Schalke bench.
The German club could no longer guarantee the first-team football to ensure he is part of the Germany squad for next year’s World Cup.
Hoewedes was one of the few to play every minute of Germany’s seven matches on its way to winning the title in Brazil in 2014.
In England, West Bromwich Albion has signed left back Keiran Gibbs from Premier League rival Arsenal on a four-year contract, the club announced yesterday.
The 27-year-old, who has 10 caps for England, made more than 200 appearances for Arsenal over more than a decade at the north London club. No fee was disclosed, but British media reported that Gibbs cost between 5 million pounds (US$6.5 million) and 7 million pounds.
“I would like to thank (Arsenal manager) Arsene Wenger for giving me the chance to start my career and fulfil a dream!!” Gibbs said on Twitter. “Now it’s time for the next chapter with West Brom.”
Gibbs is West Brom’s 6th signing of the summer transfer window following the arrivals of Oliver Burke, Gareth Barry, Ahmed Hegazi and Jay Rodriguez. The club also signed China striker Zhang Yuning who has been loaned to Werder Bremen.
