Hulk seals late ACL win for SIPG
A LATE penalty from second-half substitute Hulk earned Shanghai SIPG a 2-1 win over two-time champions Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in Doha yesterday and maintain the Chinese Super League side鈥檚 perfect start to the 2020 AFC Champions League.
The Brazilian started on the bench alongside compatriot Oscar but the introduction of the pair swung the Group H game in SIPG鈥檚 favor after the former Chelsea man was upended in the penalty area by Jeonbuk defender Hong Jeong-ho.
Hulk fired high into the net eight minutes from time to earn the win for Vitor Pereira鈥檚 side, having had Lu Wenjun鈥檚 early opener cancelled out shortly after by Jeonbuk鈥檚 Gustavo.
The result moves Shanghai level on six points with Japan鈥檚 Yokohama F Marinos at the top of Group H while Jeonbuk has a solitary point and is tied with Sydney FC.
Earlier in the day, Guangzhou Evergrande made an unconvincing start as Fabio Cannavaro鈥檚 team was held to a scoreless draw by South Korea鈥檚 Suwon Samsung Bluewings.
Wei Shihao missed from close range 15 minutes before the end in Guangzhou鈥檚 first game in Group G of the delayed continental championship.
鈥淲e鈥檙e disappointed not to get the win, it would have been good to get off with a win at the beginning but unfortunately we didn鈥檛,鈥 said defender Tyias Browning.
鈥淚t鈥檚 always a confidence booster to get a clean sheet, on defense we did our job but hopefully we can get a few more goals in the next game.鈥
Only three teams are playing in Group G after Malaysia鈥檚 Johor Darul Ta鈥檢im was forced to withdraw after not receiving permission to travel to Qatar, where the competition is being played in a centralized format inside a biosecure bubble.
Guangzhou鈥檚 next game is on Wednesday against Japanese side Vissel Kobe, which leads the standings after defeating Suwon in their meeting in February.
Fifteen teams are playing in Qatar in the rescheduled ACL matches for clubs from east Asia, with the group stage continuing until December 4. The knockout round begins on December 6 with the final also to be played in Doha on December 19.
Iranian side Persepolis has already qualified for the competition decider having progressed through the west Asian half of the draw in October.
Meanwhile in Suzhou, east China鈥檚 Jiangsu Province, Wuhan Zall avoided relegation from the CSL after defeating Zhejiang Energy Greentown 1-0 in the second leg of their playoffs yesterday, Xinhua news agency reported.
Thus, Zhejiang, the runner-up of the second-tier league, who had drawn with Wuhan 2-2 in their first leg, failed to enter the 2021 CSL season.
Both teams contended fiercely for the fateful ticket into the next CSL. Though Wuhan had the advantage of controlling the ball, the team did not pose much threat until the 28th minute, when captain Li Hang converted a penalty kick.
As the coronavirus-affected season concluded yesterday, Shijiazhuang Ever Bright was relegated from the CSL, and Changchun Yatai was promoted from China鈥檚 second-tier league.
