India trounced, Aussies held
THE most eagerly anticipated match of the Asian Cup ended in a 1-1 draw between Australia and South Korea on Friday, and Bahrain striker Ismaeel Abdulatif scored four goals in a 5-2 win over India in the other Group C game.
The match pitting South Korea against Australia was billed as a possible rehearsal for the final. And with some of the best players in the tournament playing, the game didn't disappoint.
South Korea had the better start between two of Asia's top teams and took the lead through Koo Ja-cheol in the 24th minute.
Australia had the better chances in the second half, and equalized in the 62nd through Mile Jedinak.
In the late game, Bahrain striker Ismaeel Abdulatif scored four goals to keep alive his side's hopes of reaching the quarterfinals and ensure India cannot advance.
Australia and South Korea lead the group with four points, one more than Bahrain. India has zero points after its match against Bahrain that may have been lacking in quality but was high on drama.
Faouzi Aaish gave Bahrain the lead from the penalty spot in the eighth minute, before Gouramangi Singh scored India's first goal of the tournament to equalize only a minute later.
Abdulatif then scored three goals in 19 minutes to give Bahrain a 4-1 halftime lead.
Bahrain was rattled when Sunil Chhetri pulled one back for India after the break, and Aaish was sent off for his second booking in the 62nd.
"It was a very good match of course," Bahrain coach Salman Shareeda said. "We needed this victory and it only came through good morale, spirit and performance."
Bahrain plays Australia in its final group game next week, needing to win to advance to the last eight.
