Injured duo boost Irish Euro hopes
REPUBLIC of Ireland boss Martin O’Neill received a major boost ahead of today’s Euro 2016 clash with Bosnia-Herzegovina when Shane Long and John O’Shea resumed training.
The pair, who missed the first leg in Zenica on Friday through a combination of injury and suspension, were joined by striker Jonathan Walters, who like O’Shea, was suspended for the 1-1 draw.
O’Neill will hope Sunderland defender O’Shea, who has not played since damaging a hamstring in the northeast derby against Newcastle United two weeks ago, and Southampton striker Long, who limped out of the 1-2 defeat in Poland on October 11 with a foot problem, are both available as the campaign draws to a close at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium.
Robbie Brady’s strike in Bosnia handed the Republic a precious away goal, meaning a 0-0 draw or any victory will be enough to book its trip to France next year.
On Saturday, European football paid tribute to the victims of attacks in France during playoffs which saw Sweden edge Denmark 2-1 and Ukraine beat Slovenia 2-0 in first-leg ties.
A minute’s silence was observed before Saturday’s games for victims of the Paris attacks on Friday, one of which was outside the Stade de France where world champions Germany was playing a friendly against France.
In Solna, Paris Saint-Germain star Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored his ninth goal in as many qualifiers as Sweden took a slight advantage over 1992 champion Denmark.
Ibrahimovic converted a second-half penalty after Emil Forsberg had scored on the stroke of half-time. But substitute Nicolai Jorgensen grabbed an away-goal lifeline for Denmark 10 minutes from time ahead of the second leg in Copenhagen tomorrow.
