Inter Milan draws 0-0 with Sampdoria in Serie A
INTER Milan managed to draw 0-0 against Sampdoria with nine men after defenders Walter Samuel and Ivan Cordoba were sent off in the first half in the Serie A yesterday.
Sampdoria failed to capitalize on its numerical advantage even though it finished with 10 after striker Giampaolo Pazzini earned his second yellow card midway through the second half.
Samuel Eto'o had the best chance of the match late in the second half in a one-on-one with Sampdoria goalkeeper Marco Storari but couldn't beat him.
"It was a great chance for Eto'o at the end," Storari said. "It was important I stopped it as it meant we could leave the San Siro with a point.
"After Giampaolo Pazzini was sent off it meant we weren't able to take the initiative as much. We moved the ball a bit slowly and weren't able to attack and take advantage."
Inter led the Serie A with 55 points, eight more than second-placed AS Roma, which was playing Catania on Sunday. Sampdoria moved into fourth place with 40 points.
Earlier, Robert Acquafresca scored twice and Rodrigo Palacio once to give Genoa a 3-0 win over Udinese that lifted Genoa to seventh.
Neither Inter nor Sampdoria were able to establish a platform from which to attack and the closest either side came in the first half was when Eto'o dragged a shot wide in the 30th.
A minute later Samuel was sent off. Pazzini flicked the ball on for Nicola Pozzi but as the striker rounded Samuel he brought him down and received an immediate red card.
From Reto Zeigler's free kick, Cordoba was booked for encroachment and when he fouled Pozzi seven minutes later he became the second Inter player to be sent off.
After halftime it was Inter which took the initiative in attack, but a free kick from Wesley Sneijder went over the bar.
Despite its two-man advantage, Sampdoria didn't look likely to score and the best Luigi Del Neri's side could muster was a long-range shot from Daniele Mannini that Inter keeper Julio Cesar easily saved.
In the 74th, Pazzini became the third player to be sent off when his trip on Dejan Stankovic earned him his second yellow card.
