Inter faces Bayern as Barca gets Arsenal

EUROPEAN champion Inter Milan will play Bayern Munich in a repeat of last season's final following the draw for the first knockout round of the Champions League in Nyon, Switzerland, yesterday.

Inter beat Bayern 2-0 in Madrid with two goals from Diego Milito to clinch its first European crown for 45 years but struggled in this season's group stage, qualifying for the last 16 as a runner-up. Bayern topped its group with five wins out of six.

The other standout tie paired this season's favorite Barcelona with Arsenal - the team it beat 6-3 on aggregate in last season's quarterfinals.

Barcelona, which also beat Arsenal in the 2006 final, drew 2-2 in London last season before Lionel Messi demolished the English Premier League side, scoring all four goals in Barca's 4-1 second-leg win at the Nou Camp.

Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid, the nine-time winner, faces Olympique Lyon again after losing to the French side at the same stage last season.

High-flying Tottenham Hotspur will return to the San Siro to face AC Milan, after finishing ahead of Inter in the group phase.

In the other ties, AS Roma will play Shakhtar Donetsk of Ukraine, Valencia will take on Schalke 04, Olympique Marseille faces Manchester United and FC Copenhagen meets Chelsea.

In the Europa League, two-time winner Sevilla will play Iberian rival FC Porto in a standout match in the first knockout round.

Porto is the runaway leader of the Portuguese league and breezed through its group by winning five and drawing one of its six matches.

Sevilla, which won Europe's second-tier competition in 2006 and 2007 when it was called the UEFA Cup, edged into the last 32 courtesy of a draw with Germany's Borussia Dortmund in its final group game.

Whichever team advances will play either 2005 winner CSKA Moscow or PAOK Thessaloniki in the last 16.

In another match between two former winners, Anderlecht will meet Dutch giant Ajax Amsterdam, which dropped into the competition after finishing third in its Champions League group.

Villarreal, which is third in the Spanish league, will take on Napoli, the only Italian team left in the competition, and five-time European champion Liverpool was drawn against Sparta Prague.

Greek side Aris' prize for helping eliminate defending champion Atletico Madrid in the group stage is a match against big-spending English club Manchester City.

The first of the two-legged last-32 matches are scheduled for February 17, with the return games on February 24.
