Inter loss offers hope for rivals
INTER Milan's shock 1-3 defeat at Catania on Friday has reopened a Serie A title race which looked almost over just a few weeks ago.
The leader, which held a nine-point advantage in mid-February before winning just one of six games, could see its lead cut to a point if AC Milan beats visiting Chievo Verona today.
Third-placed AS Roma will also move just four points behind champion Inter, which has played 28 matches, with victory in its game in hand at lowly Livorno the same day.
"I think only Inter can lose the scudetto but if they do we want to be right there," Roma coach Claudio Ranieri, whose side won the last of its three titles in 2001, told a news conference yesterday.
"Tomorrow is a crucial day, it could be the start of a new championship for us."
On Friday, relegation-threatened Catania won after Inter substitute Sulley Muntari gave away a penalty and was sent off just two minutes after coming on.
Inter opened the scoring shortly after halftime when Diego Milito finished a flowing move involving Wesley Sneijder and Samuel Eto'o.
However, Maxi Lopez equalized in the 74th. Inter was reduced to 10 men when midfielder Muntari, who had replaced Esteban Cambiasso, was sent off for handball and Catania captain Giuseppe Mascara scored from the resulting penalty.
Catania then made it three when Jorge Martinez cut in from the left, beat Lucio and rounded Cesar to score.
In Germany, Schalke scored twice early in the second half to beat VfB Stuttgart 2-1 at home on Friday night and move to the top of the German Bundesliga.
Edu put Schalke ahead just after the break, but Serdar Tasci equalized for Stuttgart in the 50th before Kevin Kuranyi scored the winner five minutes later.
The victory moved Felix Magath's team to the top with 54 points from 26 rounds, but Bayern Munich has 53 points and can regain the lead with a home win over Freiburg.
