Inter needs extra time to bury Genoa

INTER Milan struggled to beat 10-man Genoa 3-1 in extra time and advance into another matchup with AS Roma in the Italian Cup quarterfinals on Tuesday.

With Argentina coach Diego Maradona watching at San Siro, Argentina midfielder Esteban Cambiasso redirected in a rebound of a shot from Zlatan Ibrahimovic for the match-winner in the 100th minute.

Ibrahimovic secured the victory with Inter's third goal in the 103rd ?? through the legs of Genoa goalkeeper Alessio Scarpi.

Inter and Roma have met in the last four Italian Cup finals. Inter won in 2005 and 2006 and Roma took the honors for the past two years.

After squandering numerous chances against Genoa, Inter finally went ahead in the 75th when Adriano outleaped three defenders to head in a cross from Maxwell. But four minutes later, Marco Rossi equalized.

A midfielder who has been with Genoa since the club was in the third division in 2005-06, Rossi notched his first score of the season with an impressive rising shot from the edge of the area.

Ibrahimovic replaced Adriano after the Brazilian scored and he nearly restored Inter's lead with a long free-kick that skimmed the crossbar in the 82nd.

Hernan Crespo played the entire 120 minutes and had an empty net in front of him but couldn't redirect a pass from Cambiasso in the 95th.

Adriano had a controversial penalty kick blocked by Scarpi in the 21st minute of the game.

Giuseppe Biava received a red card for a hard tackle on Adriano and replays showed that the play occurred just outside the area.

Udinese Sampdoria, Napoli, Lazio and Torino have also advanced. Juventus was to play Catania late yesterday to round out the final eight.
