Inter rides on Milito's strike
DIEGO Milito continued his remarkable goal scoring form to give Inter Milan a 1-0 advantage over Fiorentina after the first leg of their Italian Cup semifinal on Wednesday.
The Argentine, who has hit the net 13 times in Serie A this term since his move from Genoa, prodded in from close range after 34 minutes.
Mario Balotelli had set up his strike partner after outmuscling defender Cesare Natali but Fiorentina believed it was a foul and protested to the referee.
League leader Inter, which beat Juventus in last week's quarterfinal to prompt the sacking of Juventus coach Ciro Ferrara, was not at its best at a half empty San Siro but Balotelli did have a header cleared off the line among other chances.
Fiorentina had opportunities too, most notably when Juan Vargas shot wide with only reserve goalkeeper Francesco Toldo to beat.
Kenyan McDonald Mariga, signed from Parma on transfer deadline day on Monday, came on as a late Inter substitute for his first appearance.
The second leg takes place in Florence in April while in-form AS Roma hosts Udinese in the other semifinal.
In Spain, Luis Fabiano's looping header and a Mario Alvarez own goal gave Sevilla a 2-0 win over Getafe in their Copa del Rey semifinal first-leg.
Getafe, which lost to Sevilla in the 2007 final, started the match brightly at a rain-lashed Sanchez Pizjuan.
Striker Manu del Moral twice went close but was denied first by home goalkeeper Andres Palop and then by a well-timed challenge from Adriano Correia. The visitors were finding it all too easy to control possession and Sevilla coach Manolo Jimenez replaced striker Alvaro Negredo with midfielder Ndri Romaric just after the half hour.
Despite the complaints of the home fans, the change appeared to have the desired effect and Getafe keeper Oscar Ustari had to be at his best to keep out a close-range Fabiano volley in the 41st minute.
The Brazilian striker found the net in first-half added time, nodding over Ustari from Adriano's cross, and sprinted to the bench where he donned a black sombrero in homage to club president Jose Maria del Nido.
A mazy run from winger Jesus Navas led to a second for the home side with 10 minutes left.
