Inter sets high price for Mourinho's exit

INTER Milan president Massimo Moratti has met with Jose Mourinho and set the coach free to move to Real Madrid, but the Spanish club will have to pay a steep price.

The Gazzetta dello Sport reported yesterday that Moratti is prepared to let Madrid have Mourinho, right back Maicon and midfielder Ricardo Quaresma for a total of 35 million euros (US$43 million).

Mourinho has two more years remaining on his contract with Inter but apparently has an escape clause that would pay Inter 16 million euros (US$20 million) - which the coach will likely charge to Madrid. Reports in Spain indicate Mourinho, who guided Inter to the Champions League title on Saturday, is set to sign a four-year contract with Madrid worth 10 million euros per season.

Mourinho meanwhile has made it clear that he will be the one making decisions about Real's first team should he take over from Manuel Pellegrini as coach. Real coaches work under the demanding management trio of president Florentino Perez, director general Jorge Valdano and sporting director Miguel Pardeza.

Portuguese Mourinho was quoted by Spanish media on saying that he needed assurances from the La Liga club that he would be free to run the team himself if he took charge.

"I want to see what they can offer me so that I have no concerns about being able to start my work," the 47-year-old told As sports daily.

"The president is not the one who wins, he's not the one who plays and nor does he decide who is in the team and who is on the bench," Marca quoted him as saying. "That's the responsibility of the professionals: the coach, the technical structure that depends on him and the players. The coach is a very important person in the whole club structure because he should lead all the departments linked to the first team."

Mourinho hinted he was on the verge of joining Real.

"I need to meet with some (Real) people with whom I have not yet spoken to. I want to get to know the people, listen to their impressions and know exactly what they expect of me and the conditions," he said.
