International youth tourney

THE 2017 Shanghai International Youth Football Tournament kicked off in Yangpu District yesterday. Coming into its fifth year, the tournament features 10 Under-12 teams from home and abroad, including those sent by top clubs like AC Milan and Japan’s Yokohama Marinos, as well as the Royal Spanish Football Federation.

Chinese Super League clubs — defending champion Guangzhou Evergrande, Shandong Luneng, and Guangzhou R&F — as well as League 1 team Hangzhou Greentown are also represented by their youth squads. Shanghai has sent two teams representing the districts of Yangpu and Jing’an. A single round-robin format will be applied for the tournament. The 10 teams will play a total of 45 matches in a week and compete for the 60,000 yuan (US$8,823) prize money.
