Italian jockey Dettori faces probe for testing positive

ITALIAN jockey Frankie Dettori is under investigation in France after testing positive for a banned substance at Longchamp.

Dettori, who was tested at the Paris racecourse on September 16, will face a hearing of the France Galop horse racing body next week, the jockey's lawyer said on Tuesday.

"In compliance with, and out of respect for, the regulations of France Galop, he will not be commenting further until the France Galop procedures have been completed," lawyer Christopher Stewart-Moore said in a statement.

The banned substance was not disclosed.

The British-based Dettori has won more than 500 group races in his career and is a three-time champion jockey. He is best known for riding seven winners on one day at Ascot in 1996.

Dettori had four rides at Longchamp on September 16, a day of trials for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe meeting the following month.

He rode Joshua Tree to a third-place finish in the Qatar Prix Foy, while Sarah Lynx was last in the Prix Vermeille, Farhh was second in the Prix du Moulin and Willing Foe was third in the Prix Gladiateur.

Dettori has previously said his biggest regret was being cautioned by police for possession of cocaine in 1993.

"I was on all the front pages and put my family through hell," Dettori told Britain's Daily Mail newspaper in 2011. "I was cocky and had too much too soon. It made me grow up."

Last month, Dettori parted company with the Godolphin stable after an 18-year association.
