Jesus the savior as City edges up
GABRIEL Jesus showed why he is keeping Sergio Aguero out of Manchester City’s team, scoring twice including an injury-time winner in a 2-1 victory over relegation-threatened Swansea in the Premier League yesterday.
Having volleyed City ahead in the 11th minute, the 19-year-old Brazil international rescued three points for his new side by tapping in from close range in the second minute of stoppage time after his initial header was only parried out by goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.
That’s three goals in two league starts for Jesus since he completed his move from Palmeiras and the striker is rapidly becoming a new darling of Etihad Stadium.
Gylfi Sigurdsson’s 82nd-minute equalizer capped an impressive recovery from Swansea after a one-sided first half, and threatened to take two points off City in its quest for a top-four finish to qualify for the Champions League.
As it was, Jesus ensured City climbed above Liverpool and Arsenal into third place.
On Saturday, Antonio Conte’s Chelsea thumped Arsenal 3-1 to remain top of the Premier League. The win more than compensated for Chelsea’s 0-3 defeat at the Emirates in September.
Marcus Alonso scored the opening goal after 13 minutes and Eden Hazard’s sublime second goal was greeted with raucous celebrations from players, manager and fans. By the time Cesc Fabregas added a third, Arsenal was well beaten.
For all Conte’s insistence that the title race is far from over, it is going to take a monumental drop in form by Chelsea for a rival to have a serious chance.
Tottenham consolidated second place with a 1-0 home win over Middlesbrough in the evening game while fourth-placed Liverpool lost 0-2 at Hull.
Also, Everton thumped Bournemouth 6-3; Crystal Palace lost 4-0 to Sunderland; West Ham beat Southampton away 3-1; West Brom edged rival Stoke City 1-0 and Watford won 2-1 against Burnley.
In Italy, Napoli extended its unbeaten streak to 17 matches in all competitions with a 7-1 rout at Bologna in Serie A.
