Jol joins Fulham, Sevilla snares Racing's Garcia
ENGLISH Premier League club Fulham wasted little time in replacing Mark Hughes after announcing yesterday that Dutchman Martin Jol would be its new manager.
Hughes resigned after one season last Thursday amid media speculation linking him with the vacant post at Aston Villa and 55-year-old Jol was confirmed as his replacement on the club's website five days later.
The Dutchman, who managed Tottenham Hotspur between 2004 and 2007 and who stepped down as boss of Ajax Amsterdam six months ago, has signed an initial two-year contract with Fulham with the club having an option to extend for a further year.
"I am very happy to join Fulham, a wonderful traditional club," Jol said in a statement on the website.
"It is a club with good, solid foundations and a great fan base. I am looking forward to being part of the Fulham family and thank the chairman for the trust he's shown in me."
Fulham finished eighth under Hughes and will play in next season's Europa League after qualifying via the Fairplay table.
After leaving Spurs, Jol, a former Dutch international, spent two years at Hamburg SV before moving to Ajax in 2009.
He was in talks about a possible move to Fulham last year after Roy Hodgson left for Liverpool but stayed with Ajax, only to resign in December.
In Spain, Sevilla completed the signing of Marcelino Garcia as its new coach in place of Gregorio Manzano, the La Liga club said yesterday.
"I believe we have a coach for the longer term, it's the first time I have drawn up a contract like Garcia's," President Jose Maria del Nido told a news conference with the former Racing Santander coach.
"He is signing for one season with an option for two more depending on results," del Nido added.
Garcia said last week he was walking away from his contract with Racing, which ran until the end of next season, accusing Indian owner Ahsan Ali Syed of failing to honor his promises. Racing has yet to confirm Garcia's departure.
The former Sporting Gijon midfielder guided both Recreativo Huelva (2006) and Zaragoza (2009) into Spain's topflight.
Manzano led Sevilla to fifth place last season and a spot in the Europa League, before del Nido decided not to extend his contract.
