Jordan beats China in 2014 qualifier

JORDAN took control of its 2014 World Cup qualifying group with a 2-1 win over China on Tuesday.

Baha Abdul Rahman put the hosts ahead in the 49th minute with a powerful shot from Abdullah Deeb's pass before Amer Deeb added the second six minutes later as China pressed forward in search of an equalizer.

Hao Junmin pulled one back in the 57th when he caught goalkeeper Amer Shafee by surprise with a shot that went through the defensive wall, but Jordan held on for its first win over China in nine attempts.

Jordan has six points from two games and is three points clear of China at the top of Group A. Iraq has three points, while Singapore is without a point.

"We had a very tough match," Jordan coach Adnan Hamad said. "The Chinese played well in the first half but we managed to regroup and play as we planned.

"The result took us to the top of the group and we are really excited."

China had 70 percent of the possession in the first half at Amman International Stadium, but several good saves by Amer Shafee kept the scoreline blank at halftime. "We had a good start but somehow we lost the rhythm," China coach Jose Camacho said.

Jordan next travels to Singapore on October 11, while China hosts Iraq on the same day.

Elsewhere, Josh Kennedy scored either side of halftime as Australia beat Saudi Arabia 3-1 to take full six points from its first two matches.

Coach fired

The United Arab Emirates, meanwhile, fired coach Srecko Katanec of Slovenia after his team lost to Lebanon 1-3. And Asian powers Iran, Japan and South Korea saw their campaigns falter as Iran drew with Qatar 1-1, Japan was held to 1-1 at Uzbekistan and South Korea drew 1-1 with Kuwait.

Kennedy, who scored a late goal as Australia rallied for a 2-1 win over Thailand in its first Group D match last week, scored in the 40th and 56th minutes before Nasser Al Shamrani pulled one back for the Saudis.

Luke Wilkshire's penalty in the 77th restored the two-goal buffer.

South Korea was held to a 1-1 draw at Kuwait. Kuwait defender Hussain Fadel's 53rd-minute equalizer canceled out Park Chu-young's goal for South Korea in the eighth minute. Park scored a hat-trick in South Korea's opening 6-0 win over Lebanon.

Lebanon left the United Arab Emirates' World Cup hopes in tatters after it defeated the Gulf team 3-1. Elsewhere, Iraq got its campaign back on track with a 2-0 away win at Singapore.
