Juve gets big victory, Roma stays in touch

Juventus won 4-1 at Atalanta in the Italian Serie A yesterday but AS Roma eased to a 4-0 victory over bottom club Catania to keep up the pressure on the league leader and two-time defending champion.
Carlos Tevez fired Juventus into the lead in the sixth minute but Maxi Moralez’s strike saw goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon’s unbeaten streak end at 744 minutes.
Second-half goals from Paul Pogba, Fernando Llorente and Arturo Vidal secured the win.
Second-place Roma remained five points behind after a double from Mehdi Benatia and goals from Mattia Destro and Gervinho.
Fiorentina moved closer to the top three and a Champions League berth as leading Serie A goalscorer Giuseppe Rossi helped it to a hard-fought 1-0 win at Sassuolo.
AC Milan was playing city rival Inter later in a highly anticipated derby.
On Saturday, Napoli’s bid to claim a first Serie A title for almost a quarter of a century received a severe jolt when it drew 1-1 at Cagliari.
Gonzalo Higuain equalized for Rafael Benitez’s men with a 19th-minute penalty, his ninth league goal of the season, after Nene had put 11th-placed Cagliari in front early on.
Napoli, which last lifted the title in 1990, was unlucky in the 72nd when a stunning volley from Jose Callejon was disallowed for the narrowest of offside decisions.
Benitez’s team has 36 points from 17 games, now five points behind Roma and ten adrift of Juventus.
“It was difficult to play because the pitch was really bad and trying to move the ball quickly and accurately wasn’t easy,” said Benitez.
“We had more chances than they did but that’s not enough. We should have scored two or three goals.”
Goals from Nicolas Lopez and Thomas Heurtaux saw 10th-placed Udinese win for the first time in four matches, 2-1 at third from bottom Livorno.
