Juventus advances to Cup quarters

JUVENTUS advanced to the Italian Cup quarterfinals by beating Cagliari 1-0 on Wednesday, but the Serie A leader lost two players to injury.

Sebastian Giovinco put Juventus ahead in the 57th minute from the edge of the box after Cagliari had failed to clear at Juventus stadium.

Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal limped off with an apparent right knee injury in the 16th, and forward Nicklas Bendtner was carried off on a stretcher in the 43rd with a muscle problem.

It was Giovinco's eighth goal this season, having scored five in Serie A and two in the Champions League. It was coach Antonio Conte's first home match since returning from a four-month ban for match-fixing, stemming from when he coached Siena two seasons ago.

Earlier, Catania beat Parma 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw and will next face either Lazio or Siena, who play next week.

In England, Swansea needed a late own goal by defender Seb Hines to beat second-tier club Middlesbrough 1-0 and advance to the League Cup semifinals.

In France, league leader Lyon needed a late equalizer from winger Michel Bastos to rescue a 1-1 home draw with relegation battler Nancy.
