Juventus beats Inter 2-1 in Serie A
NEW Italy international Claudio Marchisio scored a spectacular winner yesterday to give Juventus a 2-1 victory over Inter Milan and slice a few points off the four-time defending champion's lead.
Inter coach Jose Mourinho was sent off for protests after Juventus went ahead 1-0 in the 21st minute following a deflection in the aftermath of a free kick from Diego.
Earlier, AC Milan won its fifth consecutive Serie A match, beating Sampdoria 3-0 after first-half goals from Marco Borriello, Clarence Seedorf and Alexandre Pato.
Inter leads with 35 points, Milan is next with 31 and Juventus has 30. Sampdoria remained in a tie for fourth place with Parma on 24 points.
After trading goals in the first half, Marchisio put Juve back in front in the 58th, collecting a rebound and dribbling around defender Walter Samuel before scoring with a difficult chip shot over goalkeeper Julio Cesar.
An attacking midfielder, Marchisio is still working his way back into shape after knee surgery.
"I worked really hard all week and I'm happy most of all for the squad, which has had a tough time lately," he said. "It means a lot for our psyche to beat a team like Inter that has won so much the last few years."
Inter defender Lucio was given an own-goal for Juve to lead 1-0. The goal was also the product of an error by Julio Cesar.
Five minutes later, Inter forward Samuel Eto'o equalized with a header from the edge of the box following a cross from Dejan Stankovic. It was Eto'o's seventh goal in 14 games since transferring from Barcelona.
Inter sent on reserve forward Mario Balotelli in the 60th for Sulley Muntari. Balotelli has been the target of racist slurs from Juve fans all season, and there was a small group of fans who insulted him again, prompting the rest of the stadium to whistle in disapproval.
Felipe Melo picked up his second yellow card in the 85th for elbowing Balotelli, leaving Juve with 10 men and prompting Inter's Christian Chivu to headbutt Mohamed Sissoko in an ensuing melee.
At the San Siro, Ronaldinho extended his run of good form by setting up the opening two goals for Milan.
"It was a marvelous and spectacular display. We really controlled the ball and carried it deep," Milan vice president Adriano Galliani said after watching the match next to club president and Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi.
Galliani recounted how Berlusconi went down and talked to the team in the changing room at halftime.
"He told the players to hold possession and that's exactly what they did," Galliani said. "With the players we have it's not a problem holding on to the ball."
With Filippo Inzaghi suspended, Milan coach Leonardo's new three-forward lineup again proved itself a success.
Borriello met a precise cross from Ronaldinho with a header on the one-minute mark, and the Brazilian nearly scored a few minutes later with a sharply angled chip shot that skimmed over the crossbar.
Ronaldinho then found Seedorf in the center of the area and the Dutch midfielder struck the target with a rising shot in the 22nd. Pato finished off the early onslaught with a close-range effort a minute later, taking a headed pass from Borriello for his seventh score in 15 games.
Ronaldinho exited in the 34th with an apparent muscle problem.
Substitute Klaas Jan Huntelaar, who scored two extra-time goals in Milan's 2-0 win over Catania last weekend, set up Seedorf for a possible fourth goal in the 87th but the Dutchman's shot went wide.
Sampdoria strikers Cassano and Giampaolo Pazzini rarely threatened and the Genoa club has now lost three straight after getting beat 3-0 by city rival Genoa last weekend and getting eliminated by Livorno in the Italian Cup on Tuesday.
