Juventus moves for Zaccheroni
ALBERTO Zaccheroni has been selected to replace Ciro Ferrara as coach of Juventus.
The Turin team has lost nine of its last 12 games in all competitions and Ferrara has been at risk for weeks.
Zaccheroni led AC Milan to the Serie A title in 1999 and has also coached Inter Milan, Lazio and Udinese in the top Italian league.
The 56-year-old Zaccheroni has been out of coaching since getting fired by Torino in February 2007 and Juventus hired him only to complete the season before possibly going after Liverpool coach Rafa Benitez.
A 1-2 loss to Inter Milan on Thursday that eliminated Juventus from the Italian Cup apparently pushed management to make the move. That followed a loss to AS Roma in Serie A last weekend, with Juventus allowing late goals on both occasions.
On Thursday, Mario Balotelli scored a minute from time for Inter's winner.
Juventus' woeful run continued despite taking a 10th-minute lead when Inter reserve goalkeeper Francesco Toldo let a Diego shot through his body.
Hosts Inter deservedly equalized when Lucio prodded in Wesley Sneijder's deflected free-kick midway through the second half and forward Balotelli sealed victory after Gianluigi Buffon could only parry Thiago Motta's shot.
Juventus fans were banned from the San Siro for their racist chants against Balotelli in recent months.
In Spain, Atletico Madrid beat second-division Celta Vigo 1-0 to reach the Copa del Rey semifinals, when Getafe also advanced despite losing to Mallorca 1-0.
Diego Forlan stole the ball away from defender Francisco Noguerol in the 26th minute before speeding in on goal to tuck a low shot past goalkeeper Yoel Rodriguez to put Atletico through 2-1 on aggregate after two legs.
