Juventus seals crucial win, Livorno goes down
JUVENTUS boosted its outside hopes of Champions League football next season when Italy striker Vincenzo Iaquinta scored twice in a 3-0 home win over Bari in the Italian Serie A yesterday.
Sixth-placed Juventus, continually linked in the media with Liverpool coach Rafael Benitez for next season, moved four points behind fourth-placed Palermo with three matches to go.
Livorno was relegated despite a 3-1 home victory over Catania while Bologna's 2-1 win over Parma also meant Siena is all but down following a 1-4 defeat at Udinese.
Inter Milan went two points clear at the top on Saturday after a 3-1 victory over Atalanta but AS Roma will retake the lead with a home win against Sampdoria in yesterday's late match. Fifth-place Sampdoria could overtake Palermo if it wins.
Napoli is now behind Juventus following its 0-0 draw at home to Cagliari. Midfielder Marek Hamsik came closest to making a breakthrough but Cagliari goalie Federico Marchetti was in inspired form, making a number of fine saves.
On Saturday, Simone Tiribocchi gave Atalanta an early lead. Diego Milito and McDonald Mariga scored to put Inter ahead at halftime at the San Siro, and Cristian Chivu hit the target midway through the second half to give Inter 73 points.
AC Milan lost whatever chance it had of catching the leaders when it lost 1-3 at Palermo. Cesare Bovo and Abel Hernandez put Palermo ahead before Clarence Seedorf responded for Milan in the second half. But Fabrizio Miccoli won it with a curling shot past Dida in the 69th.
Third-placed Milan has 64 points with Palermo six behind.
