Juventus secures title after Roma loss

JUVENTUS won a third consecutive Serie A title without playing yesterday when AS Roma, the only team with a chance, capitulated to a 1-4 defeat at lowly Catania.

Roma, which had bravely kept its challenge going by winning its last nine games, inexplicably produced one of its worst performances of the season against the Sicilian struggling side.

Mariano Izco stunned Roma by scoring twice in a six-minute spell in the first half and, although Francesco Totti pulled one back, it was only a lull in the storm.

Gonzalo Bergessio extended Catania’s lead in the 56th minute and Pablo Barrientos fired a fourth to leave Roma’s title hopes in tatters.

On Saturday, police in Rome charged a man suspected of shooting three Napoli fans before the Italian Cup final against Fiorentina with attempted manslaughter, media reported yesterday.

The Cup final, won 3-1 by Napoli at Rome’s Olympic Stadium, was marred by violent clashes between Napoli supporters and Roma fans.

Following discussions between Napoli captain Marek Hamsik and an ‘ultra’ leader, the match eventually kicked off 45 minutes late.

Three Napoli fans were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds, one of whom is reported to be in an artificial coma as surgeons decide on how best to extract a bullet which has punctured a lung and lodged near his spinal cord.

Domestic news agency ANSA reported that police had arrested a hardline ‘ultra’ Roma fan, Daniele De Santis, and charged him with attempted manslaughter.
