Kagawa forced off on Man United duty
SHINJI Kagawa's Manchester United career received a fresh setback on Tuesday after he was forced off in the early stages of a League Cup tie at third-tier Milton Keynes Dons.
The 25-year-old Japanese playmaker had been handed his first competitive start by new manager Louis van Gaal, but he lasted only 20 minutes of the game at Stadium MK following a clash of heads with an opponent.
After receiving treatment at the side of the pitch, Kagawa continued to play, but moments later he was forced to leave the fray, with Belgian winger Adnan Januzaj coming on in his place.
British television channel Sky Sports reported that Kagawa was thought to have sustained mild concussion and had been complaining of blurred vision.
Kagawa has been unable to command a first-team place at Old Trafford since his arrival from Borussia Dortmund prior to the 2012-13 season.
He appears destined to play second-fiddle to van Gaal's first-choice playmaker, Juan Mata, after the Dutchman revealed that he was dissatisfied with Kagawa's performances in a deeper midfield role during United's pre-season tour of the United States.
"Kagawa, I have tried to play him in that position in the United States and he could not fulfil my wishes and my philosophy," van Gaal said after his side's 1-1 draw at Sunderland on Sunday.
"We have spoken about that and he is more of a 10."
Despite his struggles at club level, Kagawa was included in Japan's squad for their forthcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Venezuela by new national coach Javier Aguirre earlier on Tuesday.
