Kane earns Spurs Arsenal draw

HARRY Kane returned from injury to earn Tottenham Hotspur a 1-1 draw in an absorbing north London derby and foil Arsenal’s attempts to move top of the English Premier League at the Emirates yesterday.

Requiring a first league win over Tottenham in five attempts to climb above Chelsea — which trashed Everton 5-0 on Saturday — Arsenal was given a helping hand by Kevin Wimmer’s own goal just before halftime.

But Kane, out since mid-September with an ankle injury, levelled six minutes after the break from the penalty spot.

Kane wasted two other glorious chances while both sides hit the woodwork in an intense derby.

Theo Walcott thundered a shot against the crossbar in the first half while Tottenham, which finished stronger, nearly won it late on when Christian Eriksen’s curling free kick into the area evaded everyone and bounced off the post.

After 11 games Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal stayed third on 24 points, one behind Chelsea, although Liverpool could move ahead of them both and to the top of the table if it beats Watford later.

Tottenham is unbeaten in the Premier League but has drawn its last four games and stays fifth with 21 points.

Mauricio Pochettino’s team is winless in all competition in seven games and has failed to score from open play in the last six.

In Spain, a first-half double from Gareth Bale helped Real Madrid cement its position at the top of La Liga with a 3-0 win at home to Leganes yesterday.

Reeling from a chaotic midweek 3-3 draw at Legia Warsaw in the UEFA Champions League, Real got off to a slow start against neighbor Leganes, but Bale put it in charge in the 37th minute.

The Wales international, who netted a sensational half volley against Legia, raced onto a through ball from Isco that split the visiting defense and rounded goalkeeper Jon Serantes to tuck the ball inside the near post from a tight angle.

Bale then cashed in on poor defending from a free kick to hit the second on the stroke of halftime, just beating Serantes to the loose ball from close range.

Real’s Spain striker Alvaro Morata, standing in for the injured Karim Benzema, rounded off the win in the 76th.

Real talisman Cristiano Ronaldo had a quiet game and frequently strayed offside, but nearly set up a third for Bale, who was denied by Serantes, who leapt to his left to claw away his header.

Real tops the standings on 27 points, five clear of champion Barcelona, which was visiting fourth-placed Sevilla later.

Atletico Madrid is third on 21 points following its 0-2 defeat to Real Sociedad on Saturday.
