Kane returns as Spurs see off Wolves
Harry Kane made his first appearance of the season for Tottenham Hotspur in its 1-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers, which was secured by Dele Alli鈥檚 ninth-minute penalty yesterday.
Kane, who has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester City, entered as a substitute in the 71st minute 鈥 to applause by Spurs鈥 traveling contingent at Molineux 鈥 and nearly added a second when his close-range shot was saved.
The England captain returned late for preseason training and was not deemed fit enough to play in either of Tottenham鈥檚 two previous games 鈥 a 1-0 win over City last weekend and the 0-1 loss to Pacos de Ferreira in the Europa Conference League on Thursday.
Alli earned Tottenham a second straight victory to open the season when he converted a penalty he won, having been felled by Jose Sa after getting to a through-ball just ahead of the Wolves goalkeeper.
It was the former England midfielder鈥檚 first English Premier League goal since March 2020.
Tottenham was thankful to captain Hugo Lloris for preserving the lead, with the goalkeeper denying Adama Traore in a one-on-one chance midway through the second half. Earlier, Wolves striker Raul Jimenez struck the crossbar after a foraging run by Traore.
It was a successful return to Molineux for Tottenham manager Nuno Espirito Santo, who left Wolves at the end of last season after four years.
Wolves remain without a single point after two defeats from their opening two league matches.
At St Mary鈥檚, a second-half strike from Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood canceled out an own goal from teammate Fred to earn a 1-1 draw at Southampton yesterday.
United had a euphoric start to the season with a 5-1 home win over Leeds United but could not repeat that performance and was lucky not to lose to Ralph Hasenhuttl鈥檚 organized and dynamic side.
Southampton took the lead on the half-hour mark after a bright spell when Jack Stephens dispossessed Bruno Fernandes in the United half and the host swiftly moved the ball towards Che Adams, whose shot took a heavy deflection off Fred to squirm inside the near post and past David de Gea.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer鈥檚 side leveled early in the 55th when Greenwood thumped a low shot under Southampton 鈥榢eeper Alex McCarthy after clever interplay between Fernandes and Paul Pogba, who added another assist to the five he notched against Leeds.
