Ki begins training with Celtic

SOUTH Korea midfielder Ki Sung-yueng has begun training with Celtic even though he cannot play for his new club until next month.

Ki trained with his new teammates for the first time in snow and ice on Thursday and says he expects to be playing in the Scottish Premier League by the middle of January.

The 20-year-old can make his debut in the January 3 match against fierce city rival Rangers but says he may not be fit enough by then.

Ki says he will play if manager Tony Mowbray wants him to but that "the season back home finished in November, so I need to build my body strength a bit more."

Ki joined from FC Seoul this month on a four-year contract.

The Korean admitted that he was taking a gamble with his World Cup dream by joining Celtic, aware that he has to hit the ground running if he is to feature for his country in South Africa in the summer.

"It is very important for me to be playing regularly, otherwise my manager at South Korea is not going to be too happy," the Young Asian Player of the Year said. "I join Celtic in January and that means there is not much time."
