Klopp inks Liverpool extension

MANAGER Juergen Klopp has extended his contract with Liverpool, less than a year since joining the club, the English Premier League side announced yesterday.

The 49-year old took over from Brendan Rodgers in October, after a seven-year stint with Borussia Dortmund, where he won two Bundesliga titles and reached the finals of the Champions League.

The German’s initial deal with Liverpool ran until 2018, with an option of extending it a further year, and while no details of the extension were disclosed, British media reported that Klopp has signed a six-year contract.

“We are very much at the beginning of our journey, but to already have the connection we have with this very special place is incredible,” Klopp said on the club website.

Klopp has made an instant impression during his nine-month tenure at Anfield, guiding the club to the finals of the English League Cup and the Europa League final after a three-season spell under Rodgers.

“When you have an individual of Juergen’s quality in the building it makes perfect sense to secure that person for the long term,” principal owner John Henry, chairman Tom Werner and Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon said in a statement.

Klopp’s assistants Zeljko Buvac and Peter Krawietz have also signed lengthened deals, the club announced.

Liverpool, which finished eighth last season, will start its quest to win a first league title in 27 years away to Arsenal on August 14.

Meanwhile, former Argentina boss Marcelo Bielsa has resigned as manager of Lazio after just two days in charge, the Serie A club said in a statement yesterday.

“We note with amazement the resignation of Mr. Marcelo Bielsa ... in a clear violation of the commitments undertaken in the agreements signed last week,” Lazio said, adding that it reserved the right to take legal action.

The club earlier said the former Chile coach and his staff were expected to arrive in Rome today.

Prior to taking up the Lazio job, the 60-year-old, who quit French side Olympique de Marseille after the first match of last season, was strongly linked with a second stint with Argentina after the departure of Gerardo Martino following the team’s Copa America final loss to Chile.
