Knee surgery ends Morimoto's hopes

CATANIA striker Takayuki Morimoto's "surprise" knee surgery has cost him a place in Japan's 2011 Asian Cup squad.

Morimoto, 22, underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee following last Sunday's 1-0 win over Brescia in Italian Serie A without informing the Japanese Football Association or coach Alberto Zaccheroni. "Morimoto's surgery was as much of a surprise to me and the JFA as it was for you people," Italian Zaccheroni said in Tokyo yesterday. Borussia Dortmund's Shinji Kagawa was named to Japan's 23-man squad for next month's event in Qatar. Kagawa was one of eight Europe-based players named by Zaccheroni. Japan, which has won the Asian Cup thrice, will open its campaign on January 9 against Jordan.
