Kuyt heads 10-man Reds past Toffees in derby

LIVERPOOL overcame the early sending-off of defender Sotiros Kyrgiakos to beat city rival Everton 1-0 in a fiercely-contested English Premier League Merseyside derby at Anfield yesterday.

Liverpool was a man down from the 35th minute after Kyrgiakos was sent off for a two-footed challenge on Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini, who escaped punishment for stamping on the Greek defender in the same incident, in one of several wild first-half tackles.

Everton was unbeaten in nine league games going into the match but Liverpool won it 10 minutes into the second half when Dirk Kuyt headed in a Steven Gerrard corner.

They then defended without too many scares to claim the win.

Everton winger Steven Pienaar was shown a second yellow card in injury time for a light challenge on Gerrard, but the South African was fortunate not to be sent off in the first half for a foul on Javier Mascherano.

After a lackluster start to the season, Liverpool has now collected 17 points from a possible 21 in the last seven matches.

The victory lifted Liverpool into fourth place with 44 points, but Tottenham Hotspur (42) had a chance to return there later in the day with a win over Aston Villa (40).

Elsewhere, Manchester United (53) can go top of the league with a home win over bottom club Portsmouth (15). Leader Chelsea (55) was playing Arsenal (49) at Stamford Bridge today.

In Germany, Werder Bremen showed it was still in the race for the Bundesliga title by finishing its 111th birthday celebrations with a 2-1 home victory over Hertha Berlin on Friday.

Bremen snapped a five-game losing streak thanks to striker Claudio Pizarro's game-winner nine minutes from the end. Pizarro finally struck home after hitting the right post in the 20th and twice getting stopped by Berlin goalkeeper Jaroslav Drobny in the 34th and 49th.

Werder jumped to 31 points from 21 matches but stayed sixth, four points behind fifth-place Hamburg.

Hertha Berlin suffered its first loss of 2010 and remained in last place with 11 points, seven points from safety.
