Kuyt 'trick has United reeling

LIVERPOOL forward Dirk Kuyt's hat-trick dealt a body blow to Manchester United's English Premier League title hopes as the leader was beaten 3-1 at Anfield yesterday.

United suffered its second league defeat in a week after losing 1-2 at Chelsea on Tuesday, leaving it just three points ahead of Arsenal having played a game more.

Kuyt opened the scoring after 34 minutes from point-blank range after some trickery by Luis Suarez and the workaholic Dutchman doubled Liverpool's lead five minutes later after a terrible mistake by the unfortunate Nani.

The Portuguese playmaker was then carried off on a stretcher before halftime after a tackle by Jamie Carragher.

Kuyt put the game beyond United midway through the second half, again with a simple finish, after keeper Edwin van der Sar failed to hold a curling Suarez free kick.

United substitute Javier Hernandez scored a consolation in stoppage time.

United has 60 points from 29 games. Arsenal has 57 from 28 with Manchester City, which beat bottom club Wigan Athletic 1-0 on Saturday, on 53 from 29.

City is five clear of Chelsea which was at Blackpool today. Tottenham Hotspur is fifth on 47, with Liverpool (42) sixth.

Liverpool's dreadful early-season long since ended its own hopes of a title challenge but, after a stirring rendition of its anthem, set about trying to put a spanner in the works of United's charge towards a record 19th English title.

Uruguayan Suarez, a deadline day signing who plays very much in the image of Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish, was clearly determined to make an immediate impact on his first taste of the biggest derby in English football.

He buzzed around from the start and had an early half chance as Liverpool set a high tempo.

On Saturday, Arsenal seemed to have handed the initiative back to United with a limp performance in a goalless home draw against a Sunderland side which had lost its previous four games.

Victory for Arsenal would have put its title destiny in its own hands but the Gunners mustered few clear chances and had to share the points with Sunderland for the second time this season.

Wenger was annoyed by two decisions that did not go his side's way, describing them as "absolutely disappointing and unacceptable."

West Ham United edged out of the drop zone with a 3-0 home win over Stoke City. Fulham beat Blackburn Rovers 3-2 thanks to a controversial late Bobby Zamora penalty and Ivan Klasnic also scored two minutes from time as Bolton Wanderers beat Aston Villa 3-2 and Everton beat Newcastle United 2-1.
