Last-gasp goal denies Simeone winning start

DIEGO Simeone was denied a winning debut as coach of San Lorenzo when his side conceded a goal in the fifth minute of injury-time and were held 1-1 by Racing Club in the Argentine Clausura championship.

Former Real Madrid forward Santiago Solari gave troubled San Lorenzo the lead in the 81st minute of yesterday's game, rifling his shot into the top corner after a one-two with Alejandro Gomez.

But Racing Club eased their relegation worries when Matias Martinez headed the equalizer in the 95th minute to extend their unbeaten run to six games.

Former Argentina captain Simeone, who won 106 caps, took over at San Lorenzo last week and faces a huge task

The club is burdened with debts and Simeone is expected to have to rebuild the team on a greatly reduced budget after the season ends in June.

Simeone previously coached River Plate, where he won last year's Clausura championship but quit in November after a run of 11 games without a win left them bottom of the table.

Huracan revived their campaign by winning 1-0 at Tigre with a goal from Venezuelan international Cesar Gonzalez.

Arsenal fired Daniel Garnero, who became the ninth coaching casualty since the mid-season break ended in February, after their 1-1 draw with San Martin-Tucuman on Friday.
