Late Levante goal denies Sevilla
A LATE Victor Casadesus strike earned lowly Levante a 1-1 draw at Sevilla yesterday as the hosts dropped more La Liga points in their bid for a Champions League place.
Casadesus had a shot cleared off the line by Daniel Carrico in the opening minutes but Sevilla gradually took control.
The Andalusian side scored with its first real threat on the Levante goal when Gerard Deulofeu crossed for Vitolo to nod in at the far post after half an hour.
It was a scrappy second half with plenty of stoppages summed up by Casadesus’s equalizer. Goalkeeper Beto spilled a cross from a corner and the Levante forward knocked the loose ball home.
Sevilla now has one point from two games after losing to Athletic Bilbao last weekend and is fifth with 23 points, behind Valencia and Atletico Madrid on goal difference. Levante is third from bottom on nine points.
“It was a strong performance from us. We worked hard and created chances that allowed us to draw,” Casadesus told reporters.
“We knew that Sevilla would be strong and attack us. They have different aims to us at the other end of the table but we played well.”
Real Madrid leads La Liga with 27 points after its 5-1 romp over Rayo Vallecano on Saturday and Barcelona is in second, two points behind, after the Catalans came from behind to beat hosts Almeria 2-1, with Luis Suarez providing the assists to both goals.
Later Valencia was aiming to maintain its winning run at home against Athletic Bilbao and champion Atletico was taking on second-bottom Real Sociedad, with the Basque side yet to appoint a full-time replacement for Jagoba Arrasate who was sacked last week.
In England, Chelsea tightened its grip on the Premier League title race on Saturday after it won 2-1 at Liverpool and Manchester City dropped points at second-bottom Queens Park Rangers.
After Diego Costa’s 10th goal of the campaign had given Chelsea victory at Anfield, Southampton kept pace with a 2-0 win over Leicester City, with substitute Shane Long scoring a quick-fire late brace, but City is now eight points off top spot after drawing 2-2 at QPR.
Sergio Aguero scored a brace for City, which canceled out Charlie Austin’s first-half strike for QPR and an own goal from defender Martin Demichelis.
Elsewhere, Manchester United had substitute Juan Mata to thank after it secured a 1-0 win at home to Crystal Palace that lifted Louis van Gaal’s side up to sixth place, 13 points below Chelsea.
West Ham United inched above Arsenal into fourth place despite drawing 0-0 at home to Aston Villa, while Ashley Barnes’s solitary header earned bottom club Burnley a first win of the campaign at home to Hull City.
