Late goals give China win over Kyrgyzstan

CHINA kept alive its hopes of advancing to the next round of the soccer tournament at the 2010 Asian Games with a tense 2-1 comeback victory over Kyrgyzstan.

Kyrgyzstan went ahead in the 5th minute of the Group A clash in Guangzhou and held the lead until the 83rd, when Lu Wenjun equalized with a well-timed header to Murehemaitijiang Mozhapa's floating cross from the left.

Midfielder Wu Xi scored the winner deep in added time with a powerful left-foot strike from the top of the area.

"I'm delighted to have scored this goal," Wu said. "I think we will get better results in the next matches."

Captain Zhang Linpeng said the win had "taken the edge off the defeat in the last match (when China lost 0-3 to Japan)."

Japan booked a place in the second round with a 2-0 win over second-place Malaysia in Group A to move to six points with one group match to play.

In other matches yesterday, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea ensured it progressed with a 3-0 win over the Palestinian team, Iran edged Bahrain 1-0, South Korea beat Jordan 4-0 and Turkmenistan defeated Vietnam 6-2.

The first gold medal of the games will be awarded on Saturday, when full competition gets under way. The football tournament started earlier this week.
