Late win for Celta, Espanyol fires coach
A LATE goal by striker Iago Aspas gave Celta Vigo a 1-0 victory against Real Zaragoza on Monday in the Spanish league.
Aspas connected with a cross from left back Roberto Lago to beat goalkeeper Roberto Jimenez in the 83rd minute.
Celta goalkeeper Javier Varas had been forced to save twice in the 46th minute, first from a powerful shot by Zaragoza forward Victor Rodriguez and then a header by striker Helder Postiga.
Aspas came close to having a brace but his left-foot shot was saved by goalkeeper Roberto Jimenez diving rapidly to his right in the 71st.
Celta rose to 15th place after 13 matches while Zaragoza remains 13th in the standings.
League leader Barcelona is on 37 points followed by Atletico Madrid with 34.
Meanwhile, Espanyol fired coach Mauricio Pochettino and its sports director Ramon Planes, but has not immediately said who will replace the pair.
Espanyol is in last place in the Spanish league after a 0-2 home defeat to Getafe on Sunday, with nine points from 13 games played this season.
"Mauricio Pochettino will today stop being coach to the first team," the club said in a statement.
The former Argentina, Espanyol, Paris Saint-Germain and Bordeaux central defender took over as coach in late January 2009 with the side third from bottom.
Persistent media reports in the Spanish press have linked the club to Javier Aguirre and Marcelino Garcia Toral as possible successors to Pochettino.
Mexican born Aguirre last coached Real Zaragoza, a job he held until December 2011, but has also been Mexico's national coach. Garcia Toral played as an attacking midfielder and was appointed as coach to Sevilla for this season but was fired in February following a run of seven games without a win.
