Lavezzi and Cavani fail to show up for PSG again

ATTACKING duo Ezequiel Lavezzi and Edinson Cavani were the notable absentees as Paris Saint-Germain resumed training after the New Year break yesterday morning.

The two had already missed a training camp in Morocco, culminating in a 1-0 friendly win over Inter Milan on Tuesday, further fuelling speculation that one or both could be leaving the club during the January transfer window.

According to the Le Parisien newspaper’s Twitter account, the two players arrived back at Paris’ Charles de Gaulle airport on a flight at 11am, the precise time the training session in the Paris suburbs was due to begin.

After the pair had failed to show up for the Inter Milan friendly, coach Laurent Blanc said he would be awaiting “some explanation” from both Cavani and Lavezzi.

“They’ll arrive on (January) 2 in the morning in Paris,” explained Blanc, who refused to be drawn on a possible transfer of either player when the window opens tomorrow.

“We can’t say that today. We’re going to wait until they arrive,” he said. “We’ll expect some explanation, and then we’ll make sporting decisions as a club.”

Inter Milan coach Roberto Mancini, meanwhile, said that the Italian club had not been in contact with Lavezzi.

“Lavezzi is a great player, but he’s a PSG player. There is no contact and it’s not for me to contact him,” said Mancini.

In England, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said striker Lukas Podolski could leave the club for Inter Milan.

Speaking after his side lost 0-2 at Southampton on Thursday in the English Premier League, Wenger said Inter had a “farcical” opening offer for Podolski rejected, but “after, they came back a bit more serious.”

The 29-year-old Podolski, a World Cup winner with Germany in Brazil, last played for Arsenal in its 4-1 win over Newcastle on December 13. He was not in the squad against Southampton because of a tight groin. Wenger said Podolski “would have had a big chance to start” had he been fit.

Off the pitch, police have charged a man who allegedly confronted Wenger during the Southampton defeat.

Luke Bryant, 25, from Lymington, Hampshire, was arrested and later charged with going on to an area adjacent to the playing area contrary to the Football (Offences) Act 1991.

Bryant was seen with his arms outstretched in front of the Gunners’ boss as he sat in the dug-out, but the man was swiftly bundled away down the tunnel by two stewards.
