Lavezzi apologizes for inappropriate photograph that kicked up a storm

HEBEI China Fortune’s Argentine player Ezequiel Lavezzi, locked in a racism row, has apologized for his “improper gesture.”

The Argentinean was pictured giving a slant to his eyes that was heavily criticized as a racist gesture. Both Lavezzi and the club issued statements late on Sunday evening and apologized for the photo. The picture was taken in Spain at the beginning of the season.

“We were asked by the photographer to make funny faces to make the pictures interesting,” Lavezzi said in the statement. “I did not do it with any bad intentions and did not mean to insult the Chinese people.

“I cherish the chance to play football here, and I’m having a happy time with my teammates… I deeply apologize if the photo has offended the Chinese people and fans. I will be more careful in the future.”

The former Napoli and PSG player joined the CSL side last year on a two-year deal. He made just 10 appearances for Hebei last season due to injury. The 32-year-old has been having a good run now, scoring three goals and having five assists from the last three matches.

According to Football Leaks, the club is paying Lavezzi US$56.7 million for his two-year service, the highest in the world. With Manuel Pellegrini as the head coach, Hebei China Fortune is currently fourth in the CSL standing.
