Le Saux blasts Mourinho over Carneiro row

Jose Mourinho鈥檚 spat with former Chelsea doctor Eva Carneiro has tarnished the game鈥檚 reputation and set Football Association efforts to change the sport鈥檚 culture back 30 years, FA Inclusion Advisory Board member Graeme Le Saux has said.

The Chelsea manager accused Carneiro and physiotherapist Jon Fearn of being 鈥渋mpulsive and naive鈥 when they raced on to the pitch to treat Eden Hazard near the end of the 2-2 draw with Swansea City on the opening day of the season in August.

Already a man down after goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois had been dismissed in the first half, Chelsea faced a short period with just nine players as, according to the rules, Hazard left the pitch to receive treatment.

The 42-year-old Carneiro soon had her responsibilities curtailed before deciding to leave the club.

Le Saux condemned Mourinho鈥檚 behavior and said the Portuguese鈥檚 handling of the situation had hurt the FA鈥檚 attempts to push for equality in football and could even deter clubs from employing women in key roles.

鈥淲hat concerns me most, given the work I鈥檓 doing for the FA, is the impact Mourinho鈥檚 behavior may have throughout the whole game. We鈥檙e trying to deal with some very sensitive issues and to change the culture of the game,鈥 Le Saux told yesterday鈥檚 edition of the Times.

鈥淪ome good people at the FA have taken a kicking after concluding there was insufficient evidence to charge Mourinho, whilst the whole furore may also deter women from becoming involved in football, as well as discouraging clubs from employing them.

鈥淎 lot of people are working very hard to get the game in a better place, but after the last few weeks it feels as if we鈥檝e gone back 30 years,鈥.

Mourinho, whose team lie 16th in the Premier League table, was given a suspended one-match ban and fined 50,000 pounds (US$77,390) by the FA on Wednesday for criticizing officials after his side鈥檚 home defeat to Southampton on October 3.
