Lehmann Announces Retirement
FORMER Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann will retire at the end of this season.
"I will play my last game on May 8 (when the Bundesliga season ends)," the 40-year-old Stuttgart 'keeper said yesterday. "That's what the family council decided."
He added that he won't consider any offers from abroad.
He played 61 times for Germany and was the national team's first-choice 'keeper at the 2006 World Cup and the 2008 European Championship.
Lehmann's last game for Germany was the 0-1 loss to Spain in the final of Euro 2008.
Lehmann won the UEFA Cup with Schalke in 1997, before moving to Italian side AC Milan. He was unable to establish himself in Serie A, making just five starts, and after one season was transferred to Borussia Dortmund, with which he won the Bundesliga in 2002.
Lehmann played for Arsenal for five years - helping the club to remain unbeaten on the way to winning the English Premier League in 2004 - before returning to Germany in 2008 with Stuttgart.
He will appear as an expert for Sky television at this year's World Cup in South Africa.
