Levante stays top after late strike over Sociedad
SURPRISE leader Levante continued its remarkable early-season run when Ruben Suarez netted a stoppage-time winner to help beat Real Sociedad 3-2 on Wednesday.
Six straight wins had lifted the unbeaten Valencia-based side, whose annual budget of around 20 million euros (US$27.6 million) is one of the smallest in the league, above Barcelona and Real Madrid to the top of the standings, the first time in its 102-year history it had led La Liga.
Its latest success gives it 23 points from nine matches, two ahead of Barcelona following the champion's 1-0 win at Granada on Tuesday.
Daniel Estrada put San Sebastian-based Sociedad ahead in the fourth minute at Levante's Ciutat de Valencia stadium.
Nano levelled for the home side nine minutes after the break with a deflected shot and Valdo nodded Levante in front seven minutes later before Inigo Martinez drove the ball through a crowd of players for an 86th-minute equalizer.
Suarez smashed in a superb long-range freekick deep into second-half added time to ensure Levante can live the dream for a few more days at least.
"It's only nine rounds but today we are the team to beat, we are first and people want to beat us," Suarez said.
Real Madrid stayed second after routing Villarreal 3-0.
Karim Benzema, Kaka and Angel Di Maria scored first-half goals at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium as Madrid eased past a Villarreal team clearly struggling with confidence having earned just one victory in all competitions this season.
Also on Wednesday, Jordi Alba's 82nd-minute winner gave Valencia a 1-0 victory at Zaragoza to lift it one point above Sevilla into fourth place.
Pedro Botelho and Raul Tamudo scored either side of the break as Rayo Vallecano beat 10-man Malaga 2-0.
