Leverkusen sets record but drops crucial points
LEADER Bayer Leverkusen set a German Bundesliga record for the longest unbeaten start to the season when it drew 0-0 at home to Cologne on Saturday.
The draw extended Leverkusen's run to 24 league matches without defeat this term, although Jupp Heynckes' team may come to regret dropping two points at home to a struggling mid-table team which lost 1-5 at home to VfB Stuttgart one week ago.
Stuttgart striker Cacau continued his prolific scoring run with two more goals in a 2-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt while bottom club Hertha Berlin moved closer to relegation after a 0-2 home defeat against Hoffenheim.
Leverkusen's draw lifted it 50 points, one ahead of Bayern Munich which was hosting Hamburg SV yesterday.
The previous record unbeaten run from the beginning of a Bundesliga season was set by Bayern in 1988/89 - when Heynckes was also coach.
It nearly went ahead in the 13th minute when Sami Hyypia's header was brilliant saved by Cologne keeper Farid Mondragon and defender Manuel Friedrich blasted the loose ball over the bar.
Shortly afterwards Stefan Kiessling, the league top-scorer, volleyed wide after being set up by Eren Derdiyok.
In other matches, Werder Bremen won 2-1 at 10-man Mainz, Borussia Moenchengladbach drew 1-1 with Freiburg and VfL Bochum was held to a 0-0 draw by Nuremberg.
In France, Joris Marveaux scored twice as Montpellier beat Rennes 3-1 on Saturday to tie Ligue 1 leader Bordeaux on points but having played two games more.
Defending champion Bordeaux and Montpellier have 51 points each with Bordeaux topping the standings due to a better goal difference.
Bordeaux was to play at Le Mans yesterday but the game was postponed because of bad weather forecasts.
In-form Olympique Lyon moved up to third, two points off the pace, thanks to a 2-0 home victory over Nice.
