Li set to sign up with Korean club

CHINESE international Li Weifeng is hopeful of signing up with a South Korean club that may see him play against his former club Shanghai Shenhua in the first round of the Asian Champions League.

Cha Bum-kun, the head coach of Suwon Samsung Blue Wings FC, is keen on signing the Wuhan Guanggu defender. Li's agent confirmed that the clubs were in talks but a deal was yet to be finalized. Cha was Li's first head coach at Shenzhen Ping'an in 1998. Li, however, has a strong disciplinary record and was handed an eight-match ban by the Chinese Super League last year, prompting Wuhan to pull out of the top-tier league. Li was quoted as saying in local media that it would be a way to "pay back my teacher (Cha)." "And playing soccer in a relatively simple environment without interference, suspicion and abuse is another wish," he said. Li played in Shanghai for Shenhua from 2006 to 2008. Suwon won the 2008 K-league.
