Liverpool may avoid match on tragic date

UEFA will do its "utmost" to avoid forcing Liverpool to play a Champions League match on the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough stadium tragedy.

Liverpool has asked UEFA to ensure it plays the second leg of the quarterfinals on April 14. It was on April 15, 1989, that 96 Liverpool fans were crushed to death at the Sheffield Stadium where Liverpool was playing Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup semifinals. "We are aware of the huge significance of the April 15 date for both Liverpool FC and their fans," UEFA President Michel Platini said. "That is why we will do our utmost to make sure that the club does not have to play its second leg quarterfinal match on that day."
