Liverpool rallies, wins for Arsenal, City

Liverpool came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Aston Villa at Anfield on Saturday in the English Premier League.

Villa’s Gabriel Agbonlahor chased a ball down the left side before rolling it into the box, where Andreas Weimann was left with the simplest of finishes.

A rejuvenated Christian Benteke added a second for Villa in the 36th, a week after scoring his first goal in almost 15 hours against Arsenal. Agbonlahor again was the provider.

Daniel Sturridge halved the deficit in first-half stoppage time having been restored to the starting lineup. The Liverpool forward who returned to action after a seven-week injury layoff with a goal in the 5-3 win at Stoke last week, took his tally for the season to 11. He chipped over the onrushing Brad Guzan after Jordan Henderson’s deft flick found its way into the striker’s path, deep inside the penalty area.

The equalizer came in the 53rd when Steven Gerrard converted from the penalty spot after Guzan was felled Luis Suarez.

Suarez almost won the game for Liverpool in second-half stoppage time but his attempt was palmed away by Guzan after he carved out some space in the penalty area.

The draw consolidated fourth place for Liverpool as it chases a top-four finish, with Villa in 10th place.

Earlier, Arsenal and Manchester City showed no sign of slowing up in the race for the Premier League title by grabbing routine home wins to stay 1-2 in the standings.

Spain playmaker Santi Cazorla scored second-half goals in a five-minute span for Arsenal in a 2-0 victory over lowly Fulham that keeps the Gunners in the lead by a point.

City put on another attacking clinic to breeze past Cardiff 4-2 and pass the 100-goal mark this season in all competitions after just 34 matches. Edin Dzeko, Jesus Navas, Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero netted for City, which has now scored four or more goals in a game on 12 occasions this campaign.

Crystal Palace started the day in last place but Jason Puncheon made up for his awful penalty miss against Tottenham last week by converting from the spot against Stoke, sealing a 1-0 win.

Sunderland remains second from bottom after coming from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Southampton and West Ham makes up the bottom three following a 1-3 loss to Newcastle.

Norwich climbed five points clear of the drop zone thanks to a 1-0 win over Hull, secured by Ryan Bennett’s 87th-minute goal.
