Local clubs notch wins

BOTH Shanghai teams won in the latest round of Chinese Super League games last night to stay fourth and fifth, respectively, in the standings.

Shanghai SIPG took on Hebei China Fortune in Qinghuangdao without midfielder Dario Conca, who picked up an injury during a Chinese FA Cup match on Wednesday. The Argentine will be out for at least two weeks.

In a game of few chances, a long shot from SIPG’s Jean Evrard Kouassi in the 52nd minute just missed the goal. Hebei’s French midfielder Gael Kakuta tested SIPG goalie Yan Junling with a direct freekick in the 65th, which Yan deflected over the bar.

The visitors took the lead in the 69th, when Brazilian Elkeson took a long Yu Hai pass, beat two Hebei defenders and sent the ball past goalie Yang Cheng. Wu Lei scored in the 87th to ensure a 2-0 victory.

It was SIPG’s first win in six matches. The club is now fourth on 27 points, three points behind third-placed Hebei.

Shanghai Greenland Shenhua, meanwhile, beat Changchun Yatai 3-0 at Hongkou Football Stadium. Li Jianbin got the opener in the 51st. Senegal striker Demba Ba enlarged Shenhua’s lead 16 minutes later with his league-leading 14th goal of the season. Ba assisted Obafemi Martins for the third goal in added time.

Jiangsu Suning beat Liaoning Whowin 4-3 on Saturday. It was the big-spending club’s first match under new South Korean coach Choi Yong-soo. Jiangsu is second on 32 points, seven behind leader Guangzhou Evergrande, which won 2-0 at slumping Shandong Luneng.
