Local league for amateurs gets a boost

Shanghai Shenhua Fans League, a local amateur tournament, will be christened Shanghai Super Football League in 2017, its promoter Shanghai PPsports Development Company said.

The company launched a football project called UPBOX that aims to attract funds for the development of grass-root and amateur football in Shanghai.

“UPBOX has three purposes — to manage community football pitches, youth football training and run the amateur football league,” said Zhou Liang, CEO of the company and a well-known sports commentator.

UPBOX has 12 — 5-a-side and 7-a-side — football pitches in the city. Registered amateur football teams can use UPBOX’s smartphone application to book pitches and even set up matches against other teams. The teams will be rated according to the match results.

Over 500 local teams have already registered and Zhou expects the number to go up.

PPsports has also teamed up with Arsenal Soccer School to run the school’s Shanghai unit. Arsenal will provide youth teaching material and even send foreign coaches to groom coaches.

The Shanghai Shenhua Fans League will have 16 teams in the 2016 season.
