Local scribe manhandled in Dalian

THE Chinese soccer authorities yesterday said they had launched an investigation into an incident in the northeastern city of Dalian where a Shanghai-based reporter was allegedly manhandled while doing post-match interviews.

The incident happened after the Chinese Super League game between Shanghai Shenhua and Dalian Shide at Jinzhou Stadium on Saturday night.

Tao Xingying, a reporter with Xinmin Evening Post of Shanghai, was interviewing Shenhua "coach" Jean-Florent Ibenge when she was suddenly obstructed by Guo Jun, secretary of the Dalian Football Association.

Guo has since been suspended, the Dalian association revealed yesterday while apologizing for the incident.

"I was interviewing Jean-Florent with colleagues from other media when Guo suddenly came up and pushed us to stop," Tao recalled. "Guo and another guy held my neck and threw me to the ground."

Tao was not seriously injured and was later taken to the Shenhua bus parked nearby.

The scene was recorded on camera by PPTV.com but it was forced to be deleted by security guards at the stadium.

Shenhua team members, including player-coach Nicolas Anelka, witnessed the incident and are willing to cooperate with the investigation, Ma Yue, Shenhua spokesman, said.

Ibenge has still not been officially named as Shenhua coach even though his predecessor Jean Tigana handed in his papers last week.

On the pitch, Feng Renliang's 79th-minute header from a corner was enough as Shenhua beat Shide 1-0 for its first win since Anelka took up his dual post.

Shenhua's derby rival Shanghai Shenxin lost 0-1 to Jiangsu Sainty at home yesterday.
