Lovren reveals death threats

LIVERPOOL’S Dejan Lovren, heavily criticized for recent defensive blunders, has branded death threats made against his family on social media “disgusting”.

The Croatian posted a direct message on Instagram he had received from a user that read: “I’m gonna murder ur family u Croatian prick”.

The 28-year-old captioned it with “horrible what kind of people we have”.

He added: “I don’t mind when people talk shit about me, it says more about them! But I cannot ignore when my family is threatened. I just can’t and won’t accept that. Disgusting.”

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp last week defended his player after substituting him just 31 minutes into a 1-4 loss at Tottenham Hotspur.

His performance was widely criticized but Klopp said: “I don’t wish one of you to have your mistakes discussed in public. You cannot even imagine how it feels.

“The boys are in the first place still human beings but you look like you are watching an accident and you are the kind of people standing around with smartphones instead of helping. I’m not this kind of person.

“We had a normal week. Of course it’s not the nicest week in Dejan’s life but it’s only football. People don’t become a better or a worse person through making a mistake in a football game.

“If I think about Dejan, I have much more positive things than negative things.”

Lovren’s teammate, striker Daniel Sturridge, meanwhile, is eager to make a big impact in the UEFA Champions League as he hopes to get his first start in the competition for the Merseyside club when it hosts Serbian side Maribor today.

Sturridge joined Liverpool in 2013 and the club has since qualified for the UCL twice, starting with the 2014-15 season when the 28-year-old failed to recover from his injuries before Brendan Rodgers’ side dropped into the Europa League.

Klopp has led the side back into Europe’s elite competition and Sturridge, who won the competition with Chelsea in 2012, is raring to go.

“We’ve been in the Champions League two times since I’ve been at the club,” Sturridge told the Liverpool Echo. “Obviously I missed out the first time but hopefully I can be a big part of this European campaign.

“I played in the competition many times for Chelsea and we won it when I was there. It’s nothing new to me. You want to be playing at this level. I am ready for when the opportunity comes. The manager picks the team. From my perspective, I’m feeling good. I want to stay healthy and I want to keep scoring goals for the team.”

Sturridge has made substitute appearances in each of Liverpool’s three opening UCL games but is yet to score as the club tops Group E on goal difference with one win and two draws.

The England international has started four out of 10 league matches this campaign and has scored twice with Liverpool in sixth position ahead of Saturday’s match at 16th-placed West Ham United.
