Lowly Nuremburg ends Leverkusen's superb run
BAYER Leverkusen, unbeaten in its first 24 outings, finally lost its first Bundesliga game of the season when they went lost 3-2 to lowly Nuremberg on Sunday.
Eric Choupo-Moting scored twice in five minutes before halftime to put Nuremberg ahead before Mickael Tavares increased the lead 10 minutes after the restart.
Leverkusen, who has become famous for finishing second, rallied as Bundesliga topscorer Stefan Kiessling pulled one back in the 66th minute with his 14th goal of the season and Patrick Helmes further reduced the arrears seven minutes later.
The defeat means Leverkusen, which has never won the German Bundesliga but finished runner-up four times between 1997 and 2002, ended the weekend in third place with 50 points, three behind leader Bayern Munich and one adrift of in-form Schalke 04. Nuremberg, which has 21 points, climbed out of the relegation zone to 15th.
Meanwhile, in France, Ligue 1 leader Girondins Bordeaux survived two penalties and being reduced to 10 men for an hour to earn a 1-1 draw in its top-of-the-table clash with Montpellier on Sunday.
The French champion is ahead of Montpellier on goal difference with both teams on 52 points, two clear of Olympique Lyon.
Olympique Marseille failed to put any pressure on the top two when it was held to a 1-1 draw at home by mid-table Lorient.
In Bordeaux, the match turned sour for the hosts on the half hour when defender Michael Ciani was handed a straight red card for a foul on striker Victor Hugo Montano.
Alberto Costa took the resulting penalty but Cedric Carrasso denied him with a spectacular dive to his left.
The second penalty came four minutes before the break when Matthieu Chalme handled the ball in area.
Montano took the penalty this time and had his first effort disallowed by the referee. At the second attempt, Bordeaux keeper Carrasso once again dived to his left and saved it.
Bordeaux scored on the hour when Marouane Chamakh controlled the ball after a long-range free kick and netted with a powerful right foot shot.
Montpellier leveled four minutes into added time when Costa redeemed himself with a 30-meter free kick.
