Madrid knocked out of cup by 3rd-tier club

REAL Madrid crashed out of the Copa del Rey after losing 4-1 on aggregate to third-tier club Alcorcon yesterday, while defending champion Barcelona easily advanced with a 5-0 victory over Cultural Leonesa.

Rafael Van der Vaart scored in the 81st minute at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, but the Spanish powerhouse didn't come close to overcoming its 4-0 away defeat in the first leg two weeks ago.

Madrid, which hasn't won the competition since 1993, also lost in the second round last year to another third-division club - Real Irun.

"There's a nice party going on in the locker room," Alcorcon coach Juan Antonio Anquela said. "We achieved a dream. To beat Madrid is a dream."

At Camp Nou, Bojan Krkic scored twice while Pedro Rodriguez, Lionel Messi and Xavi Hernandez added to the second-half outburst as Barcelona beat its third-division opponent 7-0 overall.

Sevilla, Valencia, Osasuna, Atletico Madrid, Villarreal, Deportivo La Coruna and Malaga were among topflight clubs who advanced to the quarterfinals, while Tenerife, Xerez, Sporting Gijon and Zaragoza did not.

At the Bernabeu, Madrid showed little spark against a solid Alcorcon unit, bringing to an end any hopes of matching Barcelona's treble-winning campaign of last season.

Even with Kaka in the lineup, Madrid's expensive roster never got it together and coach Manuel Pellegrini faced crowd chants calling for his firing, especially after taking midfielder Lassana Diarra off in the 70th minute.

"The public was upset because of (Diarra's) exit. I understand that ... he had a good game," the Chilean said. "To lose to a team in the third division can't be considered an achievement."

Earlier, Madrid president Florentino Perez said that even if Madrid failed in the league or Champions League that Pellegrini would finish the season.

Fellow second-division clubs Celta Vigo and Recreativo Huelva were the other lower-tier team to advance alongside Alcorcon.

Danilson's late goal secured a 1-0 victory and a 3-1 result on aggregate for Celta, while Recreativo needed penalties to eliminate Sporting after the clubs finished 2-2 on aggregate.

Giuseppe Rossi scored in the 75th minute as Villarreal squeaked out a 1-0 win over third-division Puertollano to go through 2-1 on aggregate.

Maxi Rodriguez helped Atletico Madrid cast its European and league woes aside to score four times in a 6-0 rout of Marbella that put it through 8-0. Sevilla also advanced easily 9-3 on aggregate after a convincing 5-1 home win.

Alcoyano nearly overcame an early two-goal deficit to advance at Valencia's expense as Carlos Marchena's and Nikola Zigic's goals inside 16 minutes proved enough in a 2-2 draw for the 2007 champions to advance 3-2 on aggregate.

On Wednesday, Athletic Bilbao must overcome a 2-0 deficit to Rayo Vallecano and Racing Santander trails Salamanca 1-0. Also, Mallorca leads Valladolid 2-1 and Espanyol trails Getafe 2-0.

Hercules defends its 2-1 lead at Almeria on Thursday.
