Magpies’ Perez sinks Liverpool

NEWCASTLE United, which made such a poor start to the season, won for the fourth match running when Spanish substitute Ayoze Perez scored 17 minutes from time to give it a 1-0 win over Liverpool in the English Premier League yesterday.

Perez, who replaced the injured Papiss Cisse at halftime, smashed home from close range at St James’ Park after defender Alberto Moreno failed to clear a loose ball in the box.

Perez also scored the winner when Newcastle won 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur last week and his goal yesterday was the highlight of an otherwise drab, low-key match that only came to life in the closing stages.

Newcastle failed to win any of its first seven league matches, but this was its third on the trot, after wins over Leicester and Tottenham, and followed its midweek League Cup win at Manchester City.

Newcastle, which was in the bottom three two weeks ago, rose to ninth on 13 points.

Liverpool remained seventh, just one point ahead of the Magpies.

Liverpool, for whom striker Mario Balotelli endured another frustrating afternoon and which saw Philippe Coutinho test Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul with a second-half header, is now nine points behind leader Chelsea having played a game more.

Brendan Rodgers’s side now faces a daunting trip to European champion Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday, before hosting Chelsea in the league next weekend.

Newcastle lost Gabriel Obertan to a thigh injury in the 25th minute, but it went close to opening the scoring when Glen Johnson had to head a shot by Cisse off the Liverpool line.

Martin Skrtel headed wide for Liverpool shortly before half-time and Krul produced a sharp one-handed save to thwart Coutinho just before the hour, but it was Newcastle which broke the deadlock.

After an incursion down the Newcastle left led by Moussa Sissoko, the Frenchman’s pass into the box was intercepted by Moreno, but the Spaniard made the error of taking a second touch and Perez lashed home.

Newcastle substitute Remy Cabella saw an attempt to inflate the hosts’ lead thwarted by Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet after a one-two with Perez, but Pardew’s men held out regardless.

Chelsea was hosting Queens Park Rangers later yesterday, when it will be seeking to preserve its four-point advantage over Southampton, which visits Hull City.

The weekend’s headline fixture arrives today, when champion Manchester City — seeking a first win in four matches — welcomes derby rival Manchester United to the Etihad Stadium.

In Germany, Schalke 04 attacking midfielder Julian Draxler will be out for the rest of the year after picking up a thigh injury in its 1-0 win over Augsburg on Friday, the club said yesterday.

Germany’s talented World Cup winner lasted only 11 seconds from the start of the Bundesliga game, pulling a thigh muscle, with sports director Horst Heldt saying it looked serious.

“He was again injured and it looks like a serious muscle injury,” Heldt said. “I do not expect Julian to play any more in this first half of the season.”

The 21-year-old is set to miss its remaining three Champions League group games plus Germany’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Gibraltar and friendly against Spain next month.
