Man United scrapes to victory at West Brom

WAYNE Rooney scored his first club goal in open play since March as Manchester United rode its luck to secure a 2-1 victory at West Bromwich Albion yesterday and move three points clear at the top of the English Premier League.

United went ahead with a Rooney header after three minutes but West Brom equalized when James Morrison stroked in a superb shot from the edge of the box after 14.

West Brom blew its chance to secure a first win over United since 1984 when Peter Odemwingie sent a 62nd-minute penalty horribly wide and the hosts paid dearly for it when Javier Hernandez came off the bench to head home a Rooney corner 13 minutes later.

The win takes United to 41 points, three clear of Manchester City, which was at home to Blackpool later yesterday. Arsenal, third on 36, was playing at Birmingham.

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has said he is "definitely interested" in bringing Los Angeles Galaxy's former England captain David Beckham to the club on loan this month.

Galaxy's Major League Soccer season restarts on March 15 and Beckham used the break to ply his trade on loan at Italian side AC Milan in 2009 and 2010.

"We'll contact LA Galaxy to see if they will let him go and if David is up for a three-month deal, we will definitely be interested," Redknapp told reporters.

Beckham, 35, had said in October that he would not have any more loan deals, after he was ruled out of last year's World Cup in South Africa by an Achilles tendon injury picked up while playing for Milan. The Londoner, who has 115 England caps, has already turned down the opportunity to join Everton on loan, while Galaxy could be reluctant to let him go after last season's injury.

"I'm sure he can still do a great job at the top level, otherwise I wouldn't bother," Redknapp added.

"He isn't going to come here and get big money - we aren't massive payers at this club. But he wants to come over here to the freezing cold and play football."

Spurs have enjoyed a superb spell under Redknapp and are in fifth spot in the league after 18 games.

The north London club is also into the knockout stages of the Champions League and Redknapp believes the addition of Beckham would be a help rather than a hindrance, despite his high media profile. "He would be a good influence around the place," Redknapp said. "I don't think it would be a distraction. Once you're in here, the gates are shut."
